Overview
We aim to bridge the Gap of lack of Bankable Deal Pipeline in Africa through an Early-Stage Investment Readiness Programme focussed on Mid-Scale Power Projects.
- A low-cost Open Learning Programme for building capacity of locally based project sponsors of on Mid-Scale Power Projects in Africa.
- To provide substantial infrastructure expertise for on Mid-Scale Power Projects Sponsors to understand project preparation, financial structuring and have a workable development plan for the project sponsor to be taken seriously within the Early Stage investment community.
- To use the programme as a basis of selection for early-stage investors to single out projects that have traction, show bankability and a sponsor team that can raise pre-development capital i.e Project Preparation Financing
Rationale
Mid-Scale Power Projects
Mid-Scale Power Projects refer to electricity generation facilities typically ranging from 5 MW to 50 MW in capacity, designed to serve industrial clusters, mini-grids, embedded generation systems, or localized distribution networks.
They bridge the gap between small-scale (off-grid or captive) and large utility-scale projects, providing reliable, decentralized power solutions often developed through Independent Power Producer (IPP) or Public-Private Partnership (PPP) frameworks.
The Early-Stage Investment Readiness for Mid-Scale Power Projects focuses on these Three (3) following that have Project Finance Characteristics
Mid-Scale Solar PV Projects
These involve solar photovoltaic systems deployed on land or rooftops to generate clean electricity for direct supply to the grid, industrial estates, or mini-grid systems.
Capacity Range: 5–30 MW.
Revenue Model: Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with utilities, industrial users, or distribution companies.
Mid-Scale Biogas Power Projects
These plants convert organic waste (agricultural residues, animal manure, or municipal waste) into biogas through anaerobic digestion to generate electricity and heat.
Capacity Range: 1–10 MW (can aggregate multiple small plants).
Revenue Model: Sale of electricity to grid or local users; revenue from waste management or carbon credits.
Mid-Scale Gas-Powered IPPs
Independent Power Producers (IPPs) develop medium-sized gas-fired plants—often modular, using reciprocating engines or small turbines—to supply power to industrial zones, distribution networks, or embedded grid systems.
Capacity Range: 10–50 MW.
Revenue Model: Long-term PPAs with DisCos, industrial estates, or captive users.
Programme Objectives
The Programme aims to help with Early Stage Investment Readiness for Mid-Scale Power Projects to typically meet the following Bankability objectives
How Mid Scale Power Projects can be characterized by a high degree of revenues predictability under a (partial or full) Contracted Revenue Arrangement with a creditworthy counterparty
How Mid Scale Power Projects Projects can be delivered under a fixed construction price and schedule with a Building (or EPC) Contractor with clear strategies for Optimal Operations during Post-Construction
How Mid Scale Power Projects can be governed independently with strong Governance Systems and operate in an environmentally sustainable manner from development stage to post-construction phase
Programme Outline
The goal of this programme is to equip infrapreneurs with an overview of Project Finance by taking them through all the stages of a Project Development Lifecycle to be able to develop and apply the skills-set to achieve investment-ready projects in Mid Scale Power Projects
